Last (optional) assignment!

Okay, I've put in your grades for the first semester.

I had been hoping that classes would have begun by now.... now I'm hoping that they'll start again in October (though I fear a 'second wave' will be used as an excuse to wipe out another semester...).

I've decided you've done enough work, but here is one more (optional) assignment. You don't have to do it but if you do, then it will raise your grade. Deadline June 14, 2020, at 20.00. I'll enter the second semester grades sometime around the 15th-16th... if you're unhappy with your grade then contact me (by email).

Here's the text.

Here's the original show (nb. the excerpts for translation are more edited than usual).

Also, I'm available by skype for consultations if you want to discuss particular assignments. If you want to discuss one or more assignments then send me an email so we can set up the specifics.

Class Assignment for May 20, 2020

A bit late, but here it is (parts of a couple of famous scenes and slightly edited).

Since it's Polish to English I'll give you more time for the deadline so send it to me by 20.00 June 02 (the day before we resume in person classes - if everything goes according to plan).

Remember the format for subtitles!

As always, take care and stay healthy (and masked in public!)

Class Assignment for May 06, 2019

Okay, it's time to translate some subtitles!

Here's the script.

Here's some info on the show.

Here's a guide on some of the conventions of subtitles.

Here's the episode (the scene starts at around 15:25). The video quality is very, very bad but it's what I could get. The subtitle script has been edited slightly for the purposes of the assignment.

Deadline is May 12, 2020 by 20.00

Class Materials for April 29, 2020

Two things:

First, here are some notes on the various forms of audio-visual translation used in Europe.

Second, a recommendation.

The Czech TV comedy series "Dabing Street" is set in 2001 in a struggling Czech dubbing studio. There's lots of distinctive Czech humor and a number of scenes take place while dubbing movies.

It's available on a couple of... non-regulation TV sites, with Polish subtitles (ironically enough).

Highly recommended.

First, this document contains some information on the last text and my answers to the questions. Become acquainted with it.

Then re-examine your texts and make any changes you feel might work. Resend your new translation with a discussion (a half page or so in Polish or English) of the changes you made or changes you wish you thought about but decided to leave (or things you'd like to change, but can't for whatever reason).

The deadline is 20.00, April 07, 2020.

Class Materials for October 09, 2019

For this week there are two items, you might not need one of them.

The first is the orientation test. You only need this if you've lost it or weren't in class the first week.

The second are notes on the orientation test, which we will be going over in the lesson.

See y'all in class!
