Class Assignment for December 07-09, 2021

Four things.

First: Due to unforeseen and extremely stupid reasons which I will explain later, there is no class again this week... but there is a new assignment for you and here it is!

On the brighter side, this is the last assignment of the (calendar) year and we will have lots to talk about in January....

As with the previous assignment, you may do this by yourself, or with one or two other students.

Since this is a bit more difficult than previous translations (humor, some odd vocabulary) you might like some background information useful.

The deadline is also extended one day (by next Monday, December 13, 2021 rather than Sunday).

The link to post your completed assignment is below the jump (click where it says 'czytaj więcej').

Second: I've been asked (for prospective students from Asia) to collect information on living expenses for students in  Poznań (both in dorms and in private accommodation) and possibilities of work and what kind of salaries student employees can expect. If you have any information you could share, then please send me a message by email or through teams. Your name would not be attached to anything or made public.

Third: I'm planning on going over the assignment about the French interpreter next week when we're back in class! So you might give that a second or third look before next Tuesday.

Fourth: Have a good week and stay healthy!

Class Materials for November 16, 18, 2021

There are two important bits of news this week.

First, there is no class this week. Last Saturday, I went outside and my clothes were not thick and/or warm enough.

(Recreation of real events)

Now I have a cold....

So, I'm staying home till I'm better.

Second, I've created groups for classes on teams (just in case).

So, check your teams and make sure you've been added to the right group. If not, then send me a message (on teams) and I will add you.

So... see you next week!

Class Materials for November 04, 09, 2021

For this week, you'll need two (2) things.

The original text.

Your translation (you should have this), you'll probably want to print one or both of these since you might want to be able to look at both.

See y'all in class!

Notes on the first assignment

Okay, a little late, but for your first assignment, here's some advice and guidance.

First, I'm extending the deadline to  October 28, at 20.00.

First translate sentence by sentence. You may occasionally turn two or more sentences in the original into one sentence in Polish. Alternately you may occasionally break up one sentence in the original into two or more sentences.

Be aware that after you are done the result won't look too much like a well-formed Polish text. Don't worry about that at this stage.

When you are done, post the assignment at the address below the fold (click where it says 'Czytaj więcej').

Make sure your last name and group number are at the top of your assignment. Just dump it at the top of the page (below the notice at the top of the page).

Enjoy!

First Assignment: Due October 12, 14 2021

 Here is the first assignment.

You can do it one of two ways (choice is up to you).

You can print it, fill it in and bring it to class next week (October 12, 14 2021).

Or you can type in answers, print it and bring it to class next week (October 12, 14 2021).

I will be collecting them so you do need to print it and bring it to class.

Enjoy!

Homework for next week

For this week, there are two homework assignments....

The first is to translate the story Before/After. You can use the notes from class to help you.

The deadline for this is April 26, at 20.00.

The second concerns, Gradation.

Re-examine your translations taking into account what we talked about in class last week. Make any changes you feel might work. Resend your new translation with a short discussion (about a third of a page in Polish or English) of the changes you made or changes you thought about making but decided to leave (or things you would like to change, but cannot for whatever reason).

The dealine for that will be April 30, 20.00

The link for posting both assignments is below the jump (click where it says 'Czytaj więcej).

Class Materials for April 14, 2021

Update: Here are the notes from today on the story Gradation.

For this week you should have your answers to the questions about 'Gradation' to hand as I will be asking you for them during class.

Here's the next assignment. Do _NOT_ translate it yet. Instead write down notes on the text. These notes can include:

- the structure of the story

- sub-parts of the story

- literary qualities of the story

- identifiable aspects of the language used (euphony, alliteration, register, foreshadowing, parallels etc).

- notes on the realia (physical and cultural) referred to in the story (including the connotations found in the story).

 - other things that you notice.

You may do this in English or Polish.

You may do this by yourself or in twos or threes.

The link to post your notes is below the jump (click where it says 'Czytaj więcej').

The deadline is Monday  April 19, 2021.

środa, 7 kwietnia 2021

After Class Assignment

 Here is your assignment....

Please note that the questions should remain in regular type but your answers should be in bold.

example:

What is the meaning of the color orange in the story represent.

It refers to the futility of crossing the border into Venezuela.

Please note that you may answer the questions either in English or Polish.

You may do the assignment alone or with one or two other students.

The deadline is April 12, 2021 at 20.00.

The link to post your assignment is below the link (click where it says 'Czytaj więcej').

czwartek, 1 kwietnia 2021

After Class Posting....

Here are my proposed subtitles after class.

If you want to rework your Wesoły Romek song then the link to post it is below the jump (click where it says 'Czytaj więcej').

The best way to do this is probably to try different words that could end each line and work backward from there.

Try to have simple words like 'sing' or 'house' or 'gas' as the end of lines.

There should be an obvious rhyme scheme (it doesn't have to be the AABBCC of the original) and the contents of the song can be different.
