Class Materials for June 06, 2023

Apparently, grilling sausages is the university's new mission (replacing the idea of educating students) so there is only class on Tuesday this week.....

We'll be going over the versions of Before/After that you received in class last week.

Each group should be ready to present their analysis of the translation (5 to 10 minutes).

You should either send me your presentation first or be able to access it on the class computer (or have it on a pendrive).

If you're (still!) not sure of what to include, this guide I made for groups two and three might be helpful. It's not required for the Tuesday group but can serve as a basic kind of guide.

Class Today May 24, 2023.... Cancelled.... 😭

Sadly, due to circumstances beyond my control, class today has been cancelled.

Okay, after a few.... interruptions... we are back on track!

So, for this week

Tuesday (Group one): Class is cancelled (this is the class I'd hoped to cancel last week before I also had to cancel Wednesday... trust me, next week everyone will be in sync!

Wednesday: Class is on! You will need two things (which you already have!).

The first is the original text of Gradation.

The second is your particular translation.

Also, everybody in all groups needs to remember this assignment, the deadline for which is rapidly approaching!

Class Materials for May 09, 2023 (and New Assignment!)

For Group one only: Yes! as announced... there will be class this week on Tuesday.

You will need:

The original text of Gradation and your translations and your answers to the questions about the text.

FOR ALL GROUPS!

The new assignment is here! Here it is!

Translated the text and at the same time include notes on what you found in the story.

These notes can include:

- the structure of the story

- sub-parts of the story

- literary qualities of the story

- identifiable aspects of the language used (euphony, alliteration, register, foreshadowing, parallels etc).

- notes on the realia (physical and cultural) referred to in the story (including the connotations they evoke).

 - other things that you notice.

The notes should be from 1/2 a page to a full page (page = 1800 characters with spaces).

You may do this in English or Polish. 

You may do this by yourself or in twos or threes.

The deadline for your translation (and analyses) will be May 14, 2023.

First, below the jump (click where it says 'czytaj więcej') is the site to submit your translation of 'Gradation'. I remind everyone the deadline is May 07, 2023 at 20.00.

Revised Deadline and New Assignment! (yay!)

 First the good news... there's a new assignment! More on that later...

Now the bad news, the deadline for the Miś subtitles has been extended until Friday, April 14, 2023 at 20.00.

If you've already submitted them but want to revise and resubmit, feel free to do so, but put the word 'resubmission' next to your name(s) and group number(s).

The new assignment is here. Do not translate it. Instead, write a half-page to full-page analysis of what's going on in the story (hint: there's more going on than it might seem at first). You should pay attention to things like story structure, use of language, use of literary devices, word choice, etc. You may write in Polish or English and as usual work singly or in a group of two or three.

Submit it to the usual place.

For this week, you will present your critiques of other people's translations of the Golden Girls subtitles (each presentation should be between 5 and 10 minutes).

You should either have your presentation on a USB stick (pendrive) or send it to me be email.

Also if you have any particular questions regarding the Miś subtitles you might have them ready.
